Does Your Basement Need a Dehumidifier?

Monday, May 9th, 2022

The short answer to this question is yes, but there are a lot of details required to get to that answer. You might be familiar with dampness in your basement, especially if you’ve got a concrete slab or a dirt basement floor, but your home’s foundation actually depends a lot on the moisture levels of the basement. Too much moisture could spell disaster in just a few years’ time, as the foundation of your home begins to rot and crumble from erosion.

A dehumidifier in Lloydminster, SK is one of the best purchases you could make for the future of your house and also for your comfort. Not only are dehumidifiers powerful systems to use for the summertime when your air conditioner is struggling to keep things cool and dry, but they can also help protect your basement from moisture.

Your Ducts Could Be Leaking!

Monday, August 16th, 2021

Leaking ducts are a major problem, not just during the summer but for the entire year. If you’ve got a centralized air conditioning and heating system, chances are they both use the same set of ductwork. These ducts are your home’s veins, transporting the cool, comfortable air to the rooms where you can feel it. However, the more leaky your ducts are, the more uncomfortable your home will be.

We’re going to focus on some major aspects about duct repair in Lloydminster, SK. We’ll talk about what can go wrong when ducts are in disrepair, and we’ll also mention how homeowners can easily tell if they need this service.

This is an insidious problem that we feel homeowners should be more aware of. People can often be too quick to assume that their air conditioner is what’s really struggling, when the ductwork could be the culprit leaking all the conditioned air!

Guardian Angle EP#6 – Carbon Monoxide

Wednesday, March 17th, 2021

Today, I have 3 simple pieces of advice that can save your life!

Blaine here for Guardian Plumbing and Heating. Excited to bring you our another Episode of the Guardian Angle. These videos are for you, our customers. They are not intended to be heavy, technical, install your own equipment tutorials, but alternatively, easy to understand tips about things that most people can do to protect their homes and increase the life of all their Plumbing and heating equipment.

Remember when you were a kid and you would ignore the advice of your parents. well….Now that you are older….and…. maybe you have kids who ignore you its time to you look back and realize how smart your parents actually were and how important it is to listen to people who have experience. Just like this video of my brother Joey and his son Caleb.

Keep Caleb in mind as I share this advice on Carbon Monoxide.

Carbon Monoxide is a tasteless, odourless gas that is extremely toxic. At times we get calls from people claiming that they can smell Carbon Monoxide in their homes and they could be right, There is a good chance that there could be Carbon Monoxide in the mix, its just not the carbon monoxide that you are smelling.

Interesting fact, a properly running gas appliance, with the correct combustion air, actually creates Carbon Dioxide, which is the same as what you breath out, but it can take a very little change, like a reduction of fresh air into your home, turn on some exhaust fans and your gas appliance will start to produce carbon monoxide instead.

Without proper ventilation these levels can increase causing serious health hazards.

  • At 35 ppm you will experience Headache and Dizziness within 6 to 8 Hours
  • At 400 ppm frontal Headaches can occur in 1-2 hours, becoming life threatening after 3 hours
  • 1600 ppm you will be puking in 20 minutes, death within an hour
  • And at 12,800 ppm you can die within 1 to 3 minutes

Carbon Monoxide displaces the oxygen in the body’s hemoglobin, essentially suffocating your organs.

The weird thing is that your body actually prefers Carbon Monoxide over 200 times more than oxygen, making the risk of poisoning extremely high.

So…. What are some things that we can do to protect ourselves?

1) Number 1 – the first thing you can do to protect yourself from CO is to get a Carbon Monoxide detector – Most commercial units go off between 30 and 50 ppm but you can also get units that will detect low levels down to 5 ppm

  • It is recommended that you place them outside the living and sleeping spaces

2) Number 2 – second thing you should do is to always check your vents, chimneys and air intakes. Especially when it gets extremely cold out, the intakes will freeze over suffocating your gas appliance and causing it not to burn clean.

3) Number 3 – you should have your equipment serviced annually by a professional. Not only will they clean your equipment, check for obvious signs of improper operation, but we always check the intakes and exhausts for blockages and the heat exchanger for cracks.

This unit is one that we found, and the clamshell design had failed and split at the seam. Looking in from the inspection panel you are actually able got see the blue flames in the plenum sending flue gases and potential carbon monoxide into the houses duct system and distributing them around the house – See Video

As you can see, it is extremely important to check over your gas appliances on an annual basis. Not only will they last longer, they will give you peace of mind that the gases are being exhausted out of the house in a safe manner. Please take the time to find the vents and intakes on your home and be aware of your neighbours vents as well as you could save their life if they don’t see it in time! If you have any trouble finding where your gas appliances exhaust out of your home, give us a call and we would be glad to stop by and show you what to look out for.

Guardian Angle EP#5 – Indoor Air Quality

Friday, February 12th, 2021

Did you know?……There is someone that is poisoning the very air you breathe at home….. and It may not be who you think it is! (are you thinking of a video of a guy walking out of the bathroom?)

Would you believe me if I told you, the very person that is poisoning your home is YOU…and your kids…and your dog! Not my dog?! Sounds like a country song!

Let me explain.

For years the construction on our homes was sturdy but not so efficient. It was a lot like this mask I made out of a pair of underwear! Basic protection from the elements. But it doesn’t wrench my beard!  With the rising fuel prices and our concern for greenhouse gas emissions we have become much more aware of making efficient homes. The best place to start for saving fuel and the environment is to prevent the heat or air conditioning from leaving the house. So we have become very good at sealing our homes. This has presented a new set of problems, it would be like putting a plastic bag over your head, you just can’t breath!

We now have extremely efficient homes but they are very unhealthy because we are not bringing in fresh air to replace the air that we have polluted with our breathing. CO2, our Pets, the VOC’s given off from furniture, carpet, viruses and gases like Radon are just a few of the contaminants we give off in our homes. Some people have tried to install an exhaust fan to pull polluted air out of the home, but if you take air out you have to bring air in to compensate or else you will create a vacuum in your home, Like the plastic bagwe talked about.  Many people will run a pipe into the return duct of your furnace and attempt to balance it out. Now all that heat you just paid for, you are blowing outside  and sucking in that -30º air in to make your house nice and drafty.

The best solution for bringing fresh air into your home is to install an Air Exchanger. What is that, you may ask…. Basically it is an automatic window with a twist. As you push the hot, polluted air outside, the air exchanger also brings cold fresh outside air inside, through a box. As they pass each other the heat is transferred to the cold air and you recover some of the energy that you just paid for.

The other benefit of this exchange is that in the winter the outside air is nice and dry, so it will de-humidilfy your home…. helping to prevent your windows from getting all frosted up and making a wet moldy mess!

There are many benefits to installing an air exchanger….. From fresh air, to creating a positive air pressure in your home and having control over air quality where you live. The latest information from the Public Health Agency of Canada on the best ways to prevent getting sick from virus’s is to have proper ventilation in your home. An air exchanger allows you to dilute the contaminated inside air with fresh, clean outdoor air.

IAQ#1 – COULD YOUR HOME BE MAKING YOU SICK?

Thursday, May 14th, 2020

EFFICIENCY = SICKNESS?

As a society we are ever concerned with the increasing cost of the day to day costs in our life. Whether it’s our Mortgage/Rent, groceries, vehicle expenses or utilities, we are always looking for ways to reduce the month to month expenses. Most of us would much rather spend our shrinking pay check on things that mean more to us like experiences with our family and the memories that come.

We are also constantly reminded to do our part in reducing green house gas emissions and whether you believe that as a society we have caused the carbon issues or not, the authorities are making sure that we are penalized if we do not take a pro active approach to do our part.

Where does this leave us?
