Chemical Drain Cleaners: We Don’t Like Them, and Neither Should You!

How do you like itching your eyes and nose while suffering from a sore throat every time you enter the bathroom? Or, perhaps you’re a fan of smelling a bleach-like scent waft up from your kitchen sink while you try to cook a delicious dinner? We get it, all of those scenarios sound awful—so let’s work hard to avoid them.

Chemical drain cleaners are a terrible solution for a problem that we encounter regularly. As your neighborhood plumber in Lloydminster, the only thing on the forefront of our minds is the health and well being of your plumbing system. Chemical drain cleaners are a hazardous solution to a problem they don’t even fix half the time.

Keep reading as we go into serious detail about the ramifications of utilizing these chemicals and what you can do instead.

Don’t Gamble with Your Plumbing

Sure, chemical drain cleaners sound like they’re an easy solution. They’re easy enough to find in the grocery store with big, bright, colorful labels. They’re named cool names like “Clog-Be-Gone” or what have you. But here’s a tip that you won’t find from anyone other than your local plumber—they just aren’t a good solution. Here’s why:

Unhealthy Chemicals

When you use chemical drain cleaners in your kitchen or bathroom, you’re using hazardous materials that are a danger to your skin, eyes, nose, mouth, throat, and pretty much the rest of your body. It’s not just close contact with the chemical itself that can be bad, but the fumes these chemicals release can be harmful to breathe in.

If you have any young family members, or family members with sensitive respiratory systems, then you’re better off staying away from these chemicals. The fumes can easily lead to health problems and they’re hard to escape once the bottle has been opened!

Long-Term Ramifications

When you pour chemical drain cleaner down your drain, sometimes they can get to work rather slowly. That means you’ll be smelling those fumes for hours, days, or even weeks. There’s not much you can do about this, since the problem is coming from inside your drains, you’re better off either waiting for the fumes to go away, or avoid using chemicals altogether!

Environmentally UN-friendly

Think about what happens when the chemicals go through your drain. They don’t disappear. In fact, they usually end up wreaking havoc on the ecosystem of your town. Those chemicals could get deposited into your local water source where animals, plants, and people consume them haphazardly. Basically, these chemical solutions are the opposite of an environmentally friendly solution.

They Don’t Work

The worst part of all this, is that chemical drain cleaners just don’t work as well as we wish they did. Often times they do more harm than good, by eating away at the lining of your pipes, causing leaks, and releasing harmful fumes when they should be removing the clog in your drain.

Call a plumber instead. We have environmentally friendly tools that have a 100% success rate of clearing your drain of clogs. Don’t gamble with your health and the condition of your plumbing system.
