What to Do When Encountering a Leak

Don’t panic! Leaks happen all the time and they’re just a part of being a homeowner. Before you start looking up horror stories online of what happened to a house when a leak was discovered too late, we want you to think about the positives. You’re going to be happy that you discovered the leak, even if it’s taken a little while, and now you can take steps to ensure it gets fixed. Just detecting the leak is one of the hardest parts, so give yourself a pat on the back for making it this far!

Now, we need to talk about the next steps. Do you shut your water off? Should those experiencing a plumbing leak in Provost call for a plumber now, even if it’s dripping into a bucket? What if the leak is alongside an exterior wall, is it still okay?

Our Unique Climate

Here in the great snowy north, a pipe leak can be a big problem with our icy winters, so you’ll want to make sure it’s dealt with the right way before it freezes up and gets even worse in the spring! The problem with frozen pipes is that they burst large holes in the pipes that don’t start leaking until the pipe begins to thaw, perhaps in late winter or during the spring. Then, not only are you dealing with a burst pipe, but a gushing leak as well!

Here’s What You Can Do

So, if you’ve detected a leak in your home, you will want to follow these steps to ensure that the problem is fixed before it gets worse or more expensive.

  1. Contact a professional. Before you do anything, you’re going to want to get a plumbing professional on the line. Keep in mind that it’s going to take time for a plumber to get to your home and provide the repair, even if you’ve got an emergency. Trucks can only go so fast, and depending on the weather, you might be stuck with your leak for a couple of hours. Make sure you let them know as early as possible so they can plan to help you ASAP.
  2. Contain the leak. How bad is the leak? If it’s gushing out and wasting gallons of water, you will want to shut your water off. This will stop your home from receiving any water, but you won’t be wasting any either. However, if the leak is just a few drips from a pipe, then you can just grab a bucket to contain the dripping water while you still use your appliances.
  3. Mop up the water. Stagnant water in your home is a big problem. It can lead to mold growth and the deterioration of your wooden furniture. Make sure you mop up whatever water has leaked from your plumbing system with towels and check around for any additional puddles.

Once you’ve followed these steps, you can work with your plumbing professional to get the pipe repaired and things back to normal!
