Where Plumbing and Heating Coalesce

Monday, February 27th, 2023

Sometimes we get caught in the weeds with how we categorize our home comfort or utility systems. We’ve got our heaters, our air conditioners, our plumbing systems, and even our indoor air quality machines, but we rarely ever think of them together. But that’s not how they work in reality!

These systems are similar to the different systems that make up the human body. You’ve got the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the digestive system, and all of them are responsible for a healthy human being. It would be silly to think of these as completely separate from one another, right?

Let’s look at how your heating and plumbing systems are intricately connected. This is why our team provides Lloydminster plumbing and heating services because we know how a trained professional can improve many of your home systems at once.

Bathroom Drains Vs. Kitchen Drains

Monday, January 30th, 2023

In many ways, drains are practically identical. They function in the same way no matter what room they’re in, and they’re always responsible for bringing wastewater to the sewer system where it can be processed at a water treatment plant. If your drains don’t do those basic functions, then something is definitely wrong!

However, the way we use our drains differs depending on the room they’re in. Shower drains, for instance, work a lot differently than sink drains. And bathroom sink drains are treated much differently than kitchen sink drains. And let’s be honest, we all know the difference between a toilet and a sink, and a toilet still counts as a drain!

So, what can you do to be a more responsible drain owner in your home? You can invest in drain cleaning by a team of professionals, but you can also utilize the following tips to ensure your bathroom drains are treated just as well as your kitchen ones.

The Guardian Angle #8 – On Demand Water Heaters

Wednesday, September 1st, 2021

Blaine here for Guardian Plumbing and Heating. Excited to bring you another Episode of the Guardian Angle. These videos are for you, our customers. They are not intended to be heavy, technical, install your own equipment tutorials, but alternatively, easy to understand tips about things that most people can do to protect their homes and increase the life of all their Plumbing and heating equipment.

Cold showers seem to be the rage these days, with benefits such as reduced stress, higher levels of alertness, better immune response, increased will power and even weight loss, people are turning the temp down in the showers to try and experience some of these positive effects. Now I’m not a doctor and I want to emphasize this is not medical advice, but even I have enjoyed what experiencing a couple of minutes in the cold shower to start my day can do! That being said, I’m not sure anyone enjoys the surprise of running out of hot water, because your teenager likes to run the shower for a ½ an hour before getting in and draining the tank.

Hot water and the luxury of showers is a fairly new concept in the grand scheme of the world. The Very First gas water heater patented was in 1868, with the most popular design in 1889 designed by Edwin Ruud. Most water heaters to this day use a very similar design and there has been very little to increase efficiencies on traditional tank style heaters. Storage style water heaters are pretty much as inefficient as the day they were designed, but they are cheap and they give us a nice storage of hot water to clean and wash with. They also need very little maintenance.

On the other hand they tend to wear out inside of 8 to 10 years in our area and with the warranty on most tanks being 6 years, its something you will need to keep in the budget. We still recommend them in most situations as being the most economical option for people.

But what about this new fangled On demand water heater we are hearing about so much lately. Well first of all the “Tankless” water heater was actually invented in 1929, so the idea has been developing for almost 100 years, I’ll be honest, I used to really dislike these units, The unit I had 15 years ago, and to say it had some early adoption issues would be putting it mildly, and it wasn’t even high efficient!

Over the past few years though On demand water heaters have improved greatly and In many situations an on demand water heater can be a great investment for customers. Let’s consider the brand Navien tankless water heaters for a second. Naviens can actually be high efficient now. They can achieve ratings of 96% efficient. They take up significantly less space, as they hang on the wall. They have a longer life than a tank due to the stainless steel heat exchanger, they only run when you need them and Navien Backs that heat exchanger with a 15 year warranty. So in the time that most people will have paid to have their tank replaced twice, these units are still going.

Another thing that the Naviens have built in, is a recirculating pump, this is a feature that has to be added onto a traditional water heater and piped in at extra costs.

Now before you go jumping to your phone and calling me. They’re are few things to consider.

  • On Demand water heaters require servicing annually
  • Good quality water is recommended, to make the cleaning easier and have them last longer
  • The up front cost is more, but you immediately begin to save.
  • If you lose power, you also lose hot water immediately as there is no storage tank.

So overall I believe that an on demand water heater can be a great option for many people, If you like the convenience of never running out of hot water, having a good solid warranty and saving money, this could be a great option for you. Just remember though, that practicing the Wim Hoff method might be necessary if you live in a place that has frequent power outages!

Guardian Angle EP#4 – Drain Care

Thursday, November 19th, 2020

What universal event in life is guaranteed to cause extreme anxiety? Besides what just happened back there. That moment when you flush the toilet and the water in the bowl begins to rise! As the singer Tim Leher is credited with penning – Life is like a sewer: what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.

Blaine here for Guardian Plumbing and Heating. Excited to bring you our another Episode of the Guardian Angle. These blogs are for you, our customers. They are not intended to be heavy, technical, install your own equipment tutorials, but alternatively, easy to understand tips about things that most people can do to protect their homes and increase the life of all their Plumbing and heating equipment.

First things first, if the water is rising in the toilet, take the lid off the tank and push down the flapper, this will stop more water from entering and causing it to overflow. This will give you time to call the plumber or grab a plunger!

Today I want to address the problem of drain maintenance. As Tim so elegantly wrote, what you put down the drain is very important. But what’s more important is what we avoid putting down our drains. Some of the biggest culprits that are completely preventable are, coffee grinds, egg shells, grease, fat or oils, paper towels, wipes, condoms and feminine hygiene products. Some of the items that are not so preventable are hair, hair products and roots.

The City of Lloydminster finds that this is such a problem that they have dedicated time and resources into an initiative called the Grease Beast to help bring awareness to the items that they don’t want put down the drain.

The best way for us to protect our homes from the expense and inconvenience of backed up drains is to prevent things like grease and coffee grinds from entering the sewer. One way to help with grease is to use parchment paper when cooking items like Bacon, Then you can just pull the parchment paper off when the grease has hardened and throw it into the garbage. The city of Lloydminster has a neat idea they call using a FOG Cup. FOG stands for Fats, Oils and Grease. Your FOG cup can be a used Biodegradable coffee cup that you would have gotten from Tims, Mc D’s, Second Cup, Starbucks or wherever you get your coffee. Place your hot or cold Fats, oils or grease into the cup, keep it in the fridge or freezer to make sure they remain in a solid state and when it is full you can actually put it in the green Organics recycling bin! Coffee grinds, just throw your paper filter into the trash. If you use a reusable filter, you need to try to get as much grinds cleaned off as possible. The other items like paper towels, baby wipes and so on, we just need to educate the people in our homes of the cost to get those items removed, and that it is not worth throwing down the drain when the garbage is just as close.

If you find yourself in a situation where people in your home have not been careful, Guardian Plumbing and Heating has Lloydminster’s most equipped Sewer Cleaning Service with the Guardian Drain Doctor. We can Auger out the lines, We can high pressure jet the lines, even removing roots and we always include a camera inspection with every service so that you know exactly what is happening and can make the best decision for your system. We have some customers that upon investigation found their line had broken or have continuous issues with roots, and with semi annual maintenance we can keep them flowing without having to dig up the lines and dumping their money down the drain. This also allows us to keep an eye on the problem to see if it is getting worse. Our protection plan members even get a complimentary 30 day guarantee on drain cleaning services. So if you are in a JAM!! Give us a call!

IT SEEMED HOPELESS, BINS FULL OF WET GRAIN, DISASTER WAS CERTAIN!

Thursday, September 12th, 2019
{Photo Credit Jason Whiting of Videre Images}

It seemed hopeless, bins full of wet grain, disaster was certain!

“For the last 2 years, Guardian’s MACHED Mobile Heating unit has been a very useful tool on our farm. 2 years ago, we had 4-5 quarters of wheat that we had to take off wet. We had an abundance of wet grain that we couldn’t sell and needed to find a more cost- effective way to dry our grain, besides taking it to the elevator. We came across Guardian’s MACHED unit and put it to work right away. We were able to dry all of our grain over the winter and by the time the following summer hit all our grain was dried and sold. Another aspect I like about the MACHED mobile unit is that it turns our 8 regular aeration bins into heater bins, which makes our drying much more effective and changes our strategy going into harvest. This year, when we hit a rainy patch later in the season, not wanting to lose days waiting for the grain to dry in the field we took out the MACHED unit and kept combining. Knowing that we have the ability to dry grain much faster than normal has changed the way we look at harvesting wet grain. In the past, we have may have been more inclined to leave it on the field and wait for it to dry, rolling the dice with the weather, but having the MACHED unit put us in a position where we are able to get it into the bin knowing that we are able to dry it. I would rather have the grain in the bin drying than in the field waiting for warm days to dry it. With the MACHED unit I can also control how much heat I put to it. We run 2 bins off our MACHED unit and we set ours to hold 30ºC. If it’s a cold fall morning the bin is 30ºC, if it’s a hot summer day the bin is 30ºC. All in all, the MACHED unit has been very useful to us and is a tool we will be using every year.”

DIRECT HEAT VS INDIRECT HEAT – A GRAIN DRYER STORY

DIRECT HEAT VS INDIRECT HEAT! HOW ABOUT THE BEST OF BOTH!!
In this Article the expert affirms that air drying is nearly impossible without heat when temperatures drop below 10ºC. They also mention that they feel using direct heat is better, because they get higher efficiencies, but the down side is it does add some water, which is counterproductive.

With our Grain Drying units we have the best of both systems! As we are an indirect system, meaning “0” water is added to the bins and our burners are 98% efficient as compared to the 80% efficiencies of our competitors. With the added protection of no flame and our ability to set the temperature exactly where you want it and it will maintain regardless of what the outside temperature is. Meaning you can dry day and night and get your aeration fans shut off faster, saving you gas and electricity. There is nothing that compares to the MACHED Grain Dying System! Call us today!!
